Saigei - a brief introduction
What is Saigei?

Saigei is a team of clinical and management professionals.  We partner with health and social care organisations to help them adapt to changes in the policies of successive governments and to prevailing economic conditions.

Yes, but what does this actually mean?

It means different things to different clients but invariably it is about making sustainable changes that affect the quality, efficiency and cost of providing care for patients and service users.

For hospitals this is usually about creating high quality efficient services that meet access targets and support a financially sustainable Trust.

For providers of community services (APOs and GP Provider Businesses) this is usually about configuring core services so they remain efficient and relevant to local needs.  And, increasingly it is about helping them to engage with acute and commissioning organisations to extend their service portfolio.

For sector and locality commissioners it is about creating circumstances and mechanisms that enable the kinds of innovative collaborations between providers that will reduce the total cost of care envelope in their locality or sector.

Saigei is measured on outcomes not time spent or weight of reports submitted.

How come you are succeeding where others do not?

We think that there are several reasons for this:

Our engagement leads have the clarity of thought and confidence that comes from having personally led lasting changes to big healthcare operations . This is both infectious and essential at the point where things get complex or fraught.

With this experience comes the insight that one never ever imposes a direction or a solution - least of all with a spreadsheet or a Gantt chart.  Instead we concentrate on ‘serving’ your teams by working tirelessly to build a consensus and free up and apply the expertise already within your organisation.

We also have faith in people and are skilled at helping them to articulate their differences and to collaborate.  This means that they adopt solutions that work for everyone not just the person with the strongest personality.  This can sometimes be a bit tempestuous but in the end this is the only way to secure committed support.

So what are you like to work with then?

We are focussed, up-beat and energetic. We are passionate advocates for the patient.  We are not cynical.

We wear suits but not every day.

We are technical experts in our field which includes management of complex operations and applied lean for healthcare but you will not hear us talking about this stuff like evangelists - its the toolkit not the reason - and we are just as happy to set it to one side if something else will work better in the particular circumstances in play.

We like seeing people succeed and are equally at ease with cleaners and consultants, practice managers and permanent secretaries.

We are much more interested in supporting the right thing than we are in adopting the accepted or predictable thing.  And we are absolutely clear that we are here to achieve outcomes and that means:

  • improvements in the clincal outcomes & the patient experience
  • improvements in operational & financial efficiency
  • improvements in staff satisfaction with and pride in their work
  • organisational learning and sustainability of the change

So we are always in a hurry to get to where the patients are and help the staff make changes that affect patients today. We say we are about Action Based Answers.

One more thing, what does “Saigei” mean?

It is an old Japanese noun meaning practical wisdom and accomplishments.

It combines the kanji Sai (as in Saigon) meaning “practical ability, aptitude, talent and genius” with Gei (as in Geisha) meaning “art [as in artisan] and accomplishments”

It is the nearest we could get to “applied common sense” which is the discipline we believe we practice.

It is pronounced “Sigh-Gay” but we had to laugh when one person in all sincerity pronounced it “Saggy”.
